After teaching arithmetic for one year at a middle school during the 1973–74 academic year, he was appointed as a teaching assistant in the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of Middle East Technical University in 1976, to teach mathematics and logic. In 1977 he began working as an assistant in the Department of Philosophy at Boğaziçi University. In 1978, with his dissertation <em>The Quantum-Mechanical Description of Nature and the Problem of Measurement</em>, he received his doctorate in philosophy from the Department of Systematic Philosophy and Logic at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Letters.</p> <p>Koç became an associate professor in 1982 with his thesis <em>Determinism and Space</em>, and in 1988 he was promoted to full professor on the basis of his study <em>The Significance of the Limitation on the Derivation of Bell Inequalities from Quantum Mechanics</em> together with a research dossier on the logical structure of quantum mechanics. In addition to his teaching career at Boğaziçi University, he held a number of administrative posts, including Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Institute for Social Sciences. He retired in 1998 at the age of forty-eight. Koç now resides in a small village near Antalya, where he continues his philosophical work without interruption.</p> <p>Among his more than twenty books are <em>Anadolu Mayası</em> (<em>The Leaven of Anatolia</em>), <em>Theologia’nın Esasları</em> (<em>The Principles of Theologia</em>), <em>Tarih ve Nazariyat</em> (<em>History and Theory</em>), <em>Nazari Mantık’ın Esasları</em> (<em>The Principles of Theoretical Logic</em>), <em>Şuur ve Nazariyat</em> (<em>Consciousness and Theory</em>), <em>Zihin ve Nazariyat</em> (<em>Mind and Theory</em>), <em>Dialektik ve Nazariyat</em> (<em>Dialectic and Theory</em>), <em>Fenomenoloji ve Nazariyat</em> (<em>Phenomenology and Theory</em>), and <em>Nazari Musiki’nin Esasları</em> (<em>The Principles of Theoretical Music</em>).</p> <p><strong>Why Yalçın KOÇ?</strong></p> <p>Philosophy, in its most general and fundamental sense, is the search for truth, and the philosopher is the one who undertakes that search. Yet to respond to the question “What is truth?” presupposes having some conception of what truth itself might be. Consequently, every answer given to this question—across different persons and contexts—even when mutually contradictory, nonetheless affirms the very possibility of truth’s knowability. This makes an inquiry into the nature of knowing itself inevitable.</p> <p>Such an inquiry, however, cannot be reduced to a purely epistemological investigation. For the knowing subject must become aware of the capacities it already possesses and, by determining its own ontological position in a genuine manner, set out on the path of understanding. To embark on a journey toward truth as a whole, without prematurely dividing epistemology and ontology, requires a profound power of analysis and critique. Yet such a task is far from easy. One must not only be acquainted with the full depth of philosophical thought as it has developed to the present but also grasp the limits and framework of the path on which one walks.</p> <p>It is precisely here that an answer to the question “Why Yalçın Koç?” may be found.</p> <p>Yalçın Koç is a philosopher who, while remaining within the boundaries of philosophy itself, points to a new possibility of truth and opens an original path of thought through his radical critiques and analyses of Western philosophy.</p> <p>Through more than twenty works, Koç explores the concepts of <em>nazariyat</em> (<em>theoria</em>) and “architectonic language,” seeking to unsettle the very foundations of what he calls the “<em>Greek–Latin Ecclesial Realm</em>” of Western philosophy—yet always from within the philosophical terrain.</p> <p>Rooted in what he names the “Leaven of Anatolia (Anadolu Mayası)”, Koç’s heart-centered (gönül merkezli) philosophy restores metaphysics, which he calls “theologia” in accordance with the ancient tradition to a central place in philosophical inquiry. He treats metaphysics with a philosophical rigor and a singular terminology at a time when, especially since the eighteenth century under the influence of Kant, metaphysics has gradually lost its standing within philosophy and is today often dismissed as a legitimate mode of inquiry.</p> <p>In short, Yalçın Koç’s philosophical perspective has begun to attract significant attention within Turkish philosophical circles, and we believe that engaging with his ideas is of importance not only for the development of philosophy in Turkey but also for the broader international philosophical arena.
